Online Safety - A great modern challenge

The 2020 pandemic exposed us all to new ways of doing almost anything. Where we once discouraged children from spending too much time on their devices, the opposite was suddenly true as schools and lessons went online. Old habits die hard and so many more children are today taking online catch up classes and music lessons than ever before.

I was recently part of a parent group where parents were very confident that they were 'Tech aware'. They were happy that they had the required knowledge to keep their children safe online but when quizzed about what exactly they do to keep their children safe, the answers were rather vague.

From online shopping to working from home, streaming programmes, News, Video calls and Social Media, we are all constantly online and it is no wonder that our children are simply following in our footsteps. In fact it is often parents who introduce children to the internet handing over phones and tablets to entertain children and other educational activities.

The internet is here to stay and the cat and mouse game of trying to keep a lid on online access is getting more complicated as young people often keep up with the technology faster than the parents do.

So how can we keep children safe online? Do the adults understand the basics of online safety? Remember that technology is constantly changing which means parents also have to constantly update security measures as apps and devices are regularly updated.

To be in the know, you need to keep up with the changes and know when to get help from expert organisations, some of wish are below.
